Dark walls can be sophisticated, moody, and so stunning, but if not done right, they can also make a space feel heavy and uninviting.
If you’re on the fence about going bold, don’t worry! Whether you’re thinking about a deep charcoal, a rich navy, or even an inky black, I’ve got you covered with the basic do’s and don’ts of dark walls to ensure your space looks intentional and elevated.
✅ DO: Consider the Room’s Lighting
Lighting is everything when it comes to dark walls. A room with plenty of natural light can handle dark paint easily, making it feel rich and dimensional. But if your space is on the darker side, don’t worry! Just layer in artificial lighting—think sconces, floor lamps, and pendant lights—to avoid the dreaded cave effect.
Pro Tip: Warmer light bulbs will make a dark room feel cozy, while cooler light will keep it feeling crisp and modern. I personally always gravitate towards warmer bulbs as cooler light can give off more blue undertones, potentially killing the intended mood of the space.

❌ DON’T: Ignore Undertones
Not all dark colors are created equal! Some lean warm (with brown, red, or purple undertones), while others are cool (with blue, green, or gray undertones). This can make a huge difference in how the paint looks in different lighting. In the gallery below, the color Black Fox is what’s used in the photos of my room in this post. The colors Tricorn Black and Inkwell are both shades of black, by Sherwin Williams, and you can see how an undertone in Inkwell influences the color compared to Tricorn Black, a true shade of black.
Always swatch your paint in various spots and check it throughout the day before committing!

✅ DO: Use Contrast to Your Advantage
Dark walls look best when paired with contrasting elements. Try adding:
- Accent pieces to add depth and color.
- Bright artwork or metallic accents to reflect light.
- Mirrors to bounce light around and create depth.
Contrast keeps the space from feeling flat and enhances the drama in the best way!

✅ DO: Play with Different Finishes
The finish you choose can completely change the feel of your dark walls:
- Matte or eggshell gives a soft, velvety look—perfect for a luxe, moody vibe.
- Satin or glossy finishes reflect more light and can feel a little more glamorous.
Pro Tip: Matte finishes can show smudges more easily, so if you’re painting a high-traffic area, consider an easy-to-clean satin or eggshell finish.
❌ DON’T: Forget to Layer Different Elements
A dark room can feel one-dimensional if it’s all one tone and texture. The key to making it feel rich and cozy? Layer different materials!
- Combine wood, metal, glass, stone, and textiles for depth.
- Use woven rugs, soft linen curtains, and cozy throws to add warmth.
- Mix matte and glossy finishes for contrast.
Dark walls are all about creating a mood so don’t be afraid to add in touches of texture to make the space feel alive.

✅ BONUS: Don’t Be Afraid of a Dark Ceiling!
Thinking about taking it one step further? A dark ceiling can actually make a room feel bigger, cozier, and more dramatic, especially in spaces with high ceilings. In the room shown in the photos throughout this post, I’m so happy I painted the ceilings the same shade as the walls because the room feels even bigger…and more inviting!
- In a small room, a dark ceiling creates an intimate, cocoon-like feel.
- In a large space, it can help balance the proportions and add visual interest.
- Pair with reflective finishes, metallics, and warm lighting to keep it from feeling too heavy.
Final Thoughts: Should You Go Dark?
If you’ve been hesitating to take the plunge with dark walls, this is your sign! When done right, they can add sophistication, drama, and personality to any space. Just remember to balance the elements, test your paint, and layer your lighting and you’ll be left with a space that feels intentional and effortlessly stylish.
