From Gloom to Glow: Kicking Off My Bright & Airy Kitchen Refresh!

Okay, it isn’t exactly gloomy, but being a little dramatic isn’t always a bad thing 🙂

When we first purchased our home, we loved that it had been fully remodeled and ready for us to settle in. The kitchen, in particular, had a modern look with grey cabinets+black hardware and a matching black/grey tile backsplash. While many friends loved the look, I wasn’t particularly fond of it and always knew I wanted something different. And as I began refreshing other parts of the home, it became clear that the kitchen’s style didn’t flow with the light, airy aesthetic I enjoy, especially with the open floor concept of the main part of the house. Essentially the living room, kitchen, and family room are one continuous corridor of the house, so as I refreshed the connecting living room, for example, immediately walking into the kitchen now felt as if it was out of sync stylistically. This, however, gave a great excuse to start another project!

With a bit of the backstory, here’s the plan: I’ll be lightening the cabinets, painting the tiles to a crisp, glossy white, and swapping out the dark hardware for beautiful brass or gold accents. All of this work will be split into parts here on the Storyboard and on my Instagram feed. Having already been through the refresh, I can tell you there were a few bumps in the road, especially with the transformation of the tiles. But there wasn’t any issue I didn’t find a solution for, and I suppose when you’re doing some DIY work, part of the fun comes from the trial & error nature of it.

Stay tuned for more parts of the refresh. In the meantime, below you’ll find a link to my Instagram reel introducing the project.
