When we first toured our home several years back, the entire house had been renovated, and each plain white room presented amazing opportunities for creative interior design ideas. I clearly remember the front bedroom—a simple white box with zero character, begging for some personality. I remember imagining its potential, but never gave thought to just how much of a transformation this room would go through.
Once moved in, we initially staged the room with furniture, but didn’t touch it for a time because we wanted to get acclimated in our new home and take some time to let it dictate to us what should be done. I’ve always been one to simmer on ideas for a while to see if they still sound good several weeks or months later. In this particular case, I waited over a year to finally make a decision on how to remodel.
Enter my foray into the world of DIY 🙂
Despite having nearly zero experience with tools like saws or trim cutters, I watched many YouTube and Instagram tutorials to determine how easy or difficult this DIY project would be, and after some trial & error, I taught myself how to cut and install wall trim.
One of the boldest choices I made was going for a dark wall and ceiling color, something I’d never thought of doing before. I was so used to painting my walls lighter colors, so going dark felt like a risk, but the end result was incredibly rewarding. Instead of feeling smaller, the room opened up, taking on a cozy, welcoming vibe with its rich textures and layers of color.
This room will always hold a special place in my memory as it was the first time I fully stepped into the DIY void, and stepped outside my comfort zone.
